Small Spaces, Big Dreams

1

The constraints laden in decorating an apartment breed creativity. The limited space can be a challenge for everyone, from the first-time renter to the seasoned decorator. We’ve compiled the best tips and tricks for you to make the most of your apartment or condo, from the walls to the floors, and beyond.

 Curtains

Installing curtain rods a few inches below the ceiling (instead of right above the window frame) make windows seem taller! The same trick works horizontally if you extend the curtain rod slightly beyond than the window. Matching your curtain color to your walls will also make the room feel larger, as the curtains blend with walls to create an unbroken line. Vertical stripes on curtains (or walls!) can also make a low ceiling feel higher.

 Furniture

Many pieces, even bulky ones such as upholstered chairs, come in narrower widths these days, so you can get a chic look without feeling like your cramming in your pieces. As well, airy pieces of furniture, such as Lucite coffee tables and chairs, or side tables with open bases, won’t weigh down you small space, and help give an open feel to any room.

Corners are an often overlooked area that can be used to squeeze in an accent chair or corner bookshelf. Using several lamps throughout a space also helps brighten small spaces, creating a warm glow.

 Walls

Light colors and soft hues can make cramped rooms bigger and brighter. Hanging a mirror opposite a window will bounce light around the room, making the space feel airier. When it comes to bookshelves, floating shelves offer storage space without bulk, or floor-to-ceiling shelves give the illusion of high ceilings.

 Floors

As with walls, lighter is better. If your apartment came with stained or dark wall-to-wall carpeting or laminate, covering that up with a rug in a lighter hue will open up any room and make it feel larger. Yes, it’s completely acceptable (even encouraged) to layer rugs over carpet. Interestingly patterned area rugs can add depth and layers to any room.
